Back To Work

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

After one week away from work, trying to get back into the groove at the office is pure torture. Well, maybe that’s a bit OTT because I kinda like my job. It’s just that I don’t like waking up in the morning.

I had liquid lunch with Kakak Cool yesterday. We both had ABC. We talked as if we hadn’t seen each other for ages. Even when I dropped her off at the office, new topics would come up. Of course the topics are mostly about other people… I wonder if we’d ever stop our Goss Channel… It’s a pity Nescafe Shake wasn’t there…

Never mind… Urgh… I’ve been wanting to write about the rest of the siblings… Never seem to find the time lah… Next person, Sleeping Beauty. She’s in the Phillipines at the moment… Hopefully she’ll be back in time for our gathering.

Are you vegetarian?

Wednesday, October 11th, 2006

Part One

A conversation between a non vegetarian Malay girl and a vegetarian Indian girl.

Malay: If you’re vegetarian, does that mean you can’t eat eggs?

Indian: Yup… Cos we consider eggs to be a living thing… Or part of a living thing…

Malay : <ponders silently and then….>    What about ikan bilis?

Part Two

A conversation between a Malay girl and Indian girl (both non vegetarian) in a vegetarian restaurant.

Indian: Why don’t you try the ribs… They taste exactly the same like pork, but you can eat them…

Malay: <Reluctant> No lah… I think I’ll try the roast duck…

Indian: <Serious tone>Oh yeah… Cos you normally can’t eat them can you… Haiwan dua alam…

Part  Three

A conversation between a Malay girl and Indian girl (both non vegetarian) discussing potluck dishes

Indian: Tomorrow, I’ll bring vegetarian chicken so you can have a taste of them

Malay: Vegetarian chicken? Is it any good?

Indian: Yeah!! Taste like the real thing, but it’s vegetarian lah…

Malay: Ooh…… <ponders silently and then…> But how do they make sure that the chicken doesn’t

           eat anything other than vegetable?

Note: All these conversation actually took place….

Seven out of eight is not bad…

Monday, October 2nd, 2006

So we had our Gang of Eight (GOE) breaking-fast cum reunion yesterday, sans Abang Violent. But the number was complete, with four girls and four guys, with the inclusion of Abang Lan who, in actual fact, was more of a hostage than a willing participant.

As usual the conversation revolved around work, DPA and the recently concluded convocation ceremony.

I am not much of a story teller. Most of the time during group outing, I would just listen and laugh and I might be tempted to interject in the conversation. But I’ll probably spend too much time constructing my sentences, that the moment of interjection would have passed.

Yesterday was no different, but I enjoyed it immensely.

During DPA, the eight of us became pretty close. It is impossible to pinpoint the actual moment that we connected, but a bond was formed. The bond was even more apparent following the reshuffling of sidang. We took every opportunity we could to hang out for drinks or dinner. We were surrogate siblings to each other, thus the gang was formed, and we are:

  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Abang Beautiful
  • Nescafe Shake
  • Abang Violent
  • Adik Gedik
  • Kayak 59
  • Kakak Cool
  • Me

Sorry for the psedonym, but I’d like to keep their identity private. If you know who these people are, just keep it to yourself, OK.

I’ll probably introduce the siblings in future blogs, so consider yesterday’s entry as an introduction to Abang Beautiful.

Beauty and the …

Before I knew him, I didn’t pay any attention to him at all. I knew his name, and what stories people say about him. Basically I only knew him by his reputation, which is essentially all that people say about him. A patchwork of fiction and facts.

I AM familiar with the saying, "Never judge a book by its cover". However, I must confess that although I enjoy every opportunity to look at eye-candy, I’ve always thought/hoped that beautiful people should be shallow and a bit stupid. Solely, because it would be totally unfair to us mere mortals, if these creatures are also bestowed with intelligence and wit. An unfair advantage granted to them just by merely being born from a good genetic combo.

But this friend of mine, who later transitioned to become my "brother", proved that despite a hint of "shallowness", he is not that bad. He has a pleasant demeanour, a good conversationalist (albeit the limited range of topics), an all-rounder (academically & artistically) and a good sense of humour.

If there is one obvious flaw that he has, it is in his single mindedness to get what he wants. A person’s ambitiousness is something that I respect. But an obsession could bring about the destruction of a person or the collapse of his connection with the people around him. I don’t think this brother of mine has reached that point yet, but sometimes I wonder about him.

He once said to me, “I don’t believe in setting standards in terms of what I want in life, be it professionally or personally. Because when you set standards or criteria which you think might fit well with you, you are effectively limiting yourself in what you can do. For me, I’ll let God decide what is best."

Hmmm… Having known him for a while now, I wonder if this is still true…
